ABOUT THIS PROJECT

After almost 2,000 years, as prophesied by many of the Old Testament prophets, God’s Chosen People have been returning to the Promised Land. No other exiled people group throughout history has ever been exiled and scattered throughout the nations of the world and then returned to their homeland, especially after 2000 years. It is simply a miracle of God and a testimony to His faithfulness. Not only have they returned, but they are prospering and speaking Hebrew, once an almost dead language.

God’s prophets predicted this incredible miracle of restoration many centuries ago. However, in the midst of this, there are those who want to destroy Israel and wipe her from the face of the earth. Radical Islam calls Israel the “Little Satan” and the United States the “Great Satan” and is intent on destroying both. Although many politicians struggle coming to grips with this, nonetheless, Israel is at the very center of the conflict, and Jerusalem is the very center of the center. Unfortunately, the Palestinian people have been put in the middle of the conflict and are being used as pawns by radical Islamic forces to fight against Israel through guerrilla warfare, suicide bombings, rocket launchings, etc. designed to create a state of fear and unrest.

We are assured that God will not allow the eradication of His people nor the destruction of Jerusalem. In Zechariah 12:1-3 we read:

This message concerning the fate of Israel came from the Lord: “This message is from the Lord, who stretched out the heavens, laid the foundations of the earth, and formed the human spirit. I will make Jerusalem like an intoxicating drink that makes the nearby nations stagger when they send their armies to besiege Jerusalem and Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock. All the nations will gather against it to try to move it, but they will only hurt themselves.

Zechariah 12:1-3 (NLT)

God’s desire is that we give Him no rest and never stop praying for peace in Israel and Jerusalem. Of all the countries and cities in the world, why is it that God instructs us to pray for Israel and Jerusalem? We will examine why over these 31 days of prayer. Also, how are we to pray for Israel and Jerusalem? We have studied the Old Testament prophecies in depth, and in them we have come to know the heart of God for His people, both Jews and Gentiles alike. God has a magnificent plan that Satan throughout history has repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, tried to thwart. God simply will not be defeated. We are privileged as members of the Body of Christ, the Church - the International Ecclesia, to play a role in God’s plan. Prayer is an important and essential part of His plan.

The word pray literally means to ask. Synonyms are appeal, invocation, and plea. However, prayer is so much more than just asking for something. The essence of prayer is connecting to God. We must never minimize our efforts in prayer. God considers our prayers very valuable indeed. He listens and records every word. In fact, Revelation 5:8 states that the 24 elders who surround God’s throne in heaven hold bowls of incense which are the prayers of God’s people. (NLT) The burning of incense is designed to produce a wonderful fragrance, and that is what our prayers are like to God. So the next time you pray, think about your connection to God and that your petitions are like incense to Him. In our daily activities, we often set times to meet with friends and business associates. How much more important to set up appointed times daily to connect to God. We need to be diligent and disciplined in our prayer. It is easy to become distracted by unintended thoughts that invade our minds when praying. This often frustrates people. One author recommended simply praying about each thought as it enters our mind. Maybe these thoughts invade our minds for a purpose, so it’s important to connect each one to God. This should give each of us great comfort.

We have struggled for many years searching for exactly how to be obedient to God’s instructions in praying for Israel. Maybe you have wondered how to do this as well? It is our hope this little book will help. Our prayers for Israel and Jerusalem will align us with God’s marvelous plan. Israel is in a spiritual battle, and prayer is God’s weapon of choice. One rabbi stated, “Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness.” Our God is faithful to His promises, and He has chosen the land, the people, the city of Jerusalem, and the nation of Israel to make His name great among the nations of the world. We must pray fervently until our Prince of Peace returns. During our trips to Israel, we have come to realize how important our relationships with Jewish people are to them. Think about it. If you were living in a very small nation surrounded by enemies who wished to see your extinction, friendships would be even more important to you. Our connection to and prayers for the Jewish people are very much appreciated. Israel is called the “Holy Land.” One day the holy city, the new Jerusalem will come down from Heaven to earth and God’s home will be among his people! He will live with them. (Revelation 21:1-3 NLT) And God’s holiness will extend from the Holy City throughout the world.

Maoz Israel Ministries is a Messianic Jewish non-profit organization, which was founded in 1976 by Ari and Shira Sorko-Ram. Their headquarters are located in Tel Aviv, Israel, with branches in the U.S., UK, Canada, Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Asia, and Latin America. Their vision is to reach all Israel with the Gospel. Their ministry is through media, translating faith books into Hebrew, humanitarian aid, support of congregations and ministries, and much more. They look forward to the day when all Israel will be saved. We asked Ari how he would recommend we pray for Israel. Here is his response:

“God is a covenant God, specifically with the nation of Israel. All God's promises to Israel are based upon various conditions which are stated in each of the national covenants of Israel; the Abrahamic, Mosaic, and the New Heart Covenant.

The Abrahamic Covenant is of course an unconditional promise to Israel. However, the Mosaic Covenant is a conditional Covenant which raises many obstacles and conditions to Israel. In order for Israel to experience the blessings and promises of the Abrahamic Covenant in its full, Israel must return to God through the New Heart Covenant, which was originally made for the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

So, in order for Israel to receive her full borders and blessings, she must first return as a nation to God, according to God's requirements. One of course is entering into a New Covenant relationship with Him through the Messiah Yeshua. Only the New Covenant can redeem Israel from the curses of the Law stated in the framework of the Mosaic Covenant, and bring Israel into the blessings of God's Law and promises.

So, the number one priority in prayer is that the Gospel will go forth throughout the Land of Israel, that Israel will return to her God in a right covenant relationship and that the body of believers will grow strong and healthy and multiply. This will, of course, need God's protection from her enemies, but all of this will be enhanced when Israel walks in right covenant relationship with God.”

We pray that God would give everyone reading this book a heart of compassion for Israel and the Jewish people. Every parent knows what it is like when their child cries out at night for help. We hear, we run, and we seek to meet their need. God calls us his children, so in the same way when we cry out to Him, He hears, runs, and seeks to meet our need. I believe He will do this as we intercede for Israel and His people. Think about it. Who is in the best position to understand what God is doing in these End Times with regard to Israel except for born again Christians, both Messianic Jews and Gentile believers. We are the ones who God wants to bridge the gap for Israel and to fight the spiritual forces of wickedness that are bent on Israel’s destruction. At one point in Israel’s history, Isaiah stated:

Our courts oppose the righteous, and justice is nowhere to be found. Truth stumbles in the streets, and honesty has been outlawed. Yes, truth is gone, and anyone who renounces evil is attacked. The Lord looked and was displeased to find there was no justice. He was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So he himself stepped in to save them with his strong arm, and his justice sustained him.

Isaiah 59:14-16 (NLT)

As we progress towards the End Time and evil increases such that truth stumbles and is gone and those of us who oppose evil are attacked, our intercession becomes all the more critical. Let us be the ones who

intervene and intercede. Unfortunately, we live in a world where anti-Semitism is once again on the rise. Many Jews fear Christians because of a spirit of anti-Semitism that has existed within the Church for centuries. The early Gentile church quickly abandoned its Jewish roots and required Jewish Christians to forsake their Jewish customs. Fortunately, over the past several decades, there has been a renewed interest in the Early Church’s Jewish roots within the body of Christ at large. We must never forget what God promised Abraham in Genesis 12:2-3:

I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

Through our intercession for Israel, Jerusalem, and the Jews, we can be the ones to bridge the gap that anti-Semitism created.

As you read and learn about Israel and Jerusalem, consider praying each daily prayer out loud. Following the thirty-one days of prayer is a list of all the Scripture verses quoted. Appendix A lists Messianic Ministries that are doing excellent work in Israel should you have a desire to partner with them. Appendix B is a list of Christian organizations that support Israel.

We believe no battle be can won in the physical realm unless it has first been fought in the spiritual realm. William Cowper, the hymn writer, said, “Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees.”

Prayer: “O Lord God Almighty, we pray that the good news of Yeshua would spread throughout Israel like a wildfire burning out of control! Please send Your Holy Spirit to work powerfully among Your Chosen People to bring revival. Multiply the Messianic believers so that they become a powerful force for You throughout the Promised Land, and in the midst of opposition, protect them from their enemies. Remove Israel’s hostility to Your covenant, pardon their sins and lead them to repentance. We each wish to fulfill the unique mission You have determined for us. Show us how to specifically intercede for Israel and Jerusalem.”
